David Gilmour who's now 70 years old, is one of the most prominent musicians in the British music, as well as worldwide. He gained recognition as a member of Pink Floyd, participating in the creation of the most legendary albums of the band. This despite the fact that he wasn't part of the band initially and was recruited as a live performer only, as a substitute for his friend Syd Barrett, who suffered from mental problems which wouldn't allow him continue touring with the band. These problems caused a lot of distress to the other band members. Eventually, David Gilmour became a permanent member of the legendary group, having a solo career as well, and his recognizable style of guitar play gained him the 14th spot among the world's best guitarists.

Notable works

There's no doubt that the most significant mark left by David Gilmour was done during his time with Pink Floyd. Following the departure of Barrett, Gilmour sang most of the parts in the albums "The Dark Side of the Moon" and "Wish You Were Here" (which was dedicated to Barrett, the main author for the band in the first years). In the next 2 albums Roger Waters took charged and sang most of the parts in "The Wall" and "Animals". However, one of the band's most famous pieces was created based on Gilmour contribution. During the time when "The Wall" was recorded he was already working on solo material and one of the pieces which weren't included in his own album became the song "Comfortably Numb" from "The Wall". Gilmour released his first solo album in 1978. It reached 17th spot in the UK chart, and 29th in Billboard, achieving gold record status. (more)

Gilmour and Pink Floyd in the 80's

The 80's were very fruitful for the artist, both a solo artist and as a member of Pink Floyd, which parted ways with Roger Waters at the time. It was done on a sore note, leading to Waters claiming that the band potential was exhausted by now. Gilmour took upon himself the future development of the band, claiming that the right way to go is by putting more weight on the musical side of things, rather on the lyrics (after few albums with dominant lyrics and "uninspired musical background" as stated by Gilmour). Starting from 1986, all the works of Gilmour and Pink Floyd were recorded in a floating music studio – on an old Austrian boat called Astoria. Gilmour recorded 4 solo albums - all were received well by fans and critics. His 3rd album was released on his 60th birthday. The last one was presented in 2015 and was accompanied by tour, composed from both solo material and Pink Floyd greatest hits. (hide)
