History – the first years of the festival

Surprisingly, at first the festival was dedicated to jazz and known as “The national Jazz Festival” founded by Harold Pendleton, who was also the man behind the Marquee club in London, the venue of the first gig of the Rolling Stones ever. The festival evolved quickly, combining young pop artist alongside the regular program. The festival migrated from venue to venue, due to various accidents of violent abruptions, especially one gang fight in 1960, which occurred due to sub cultural collisions between jazz and pop lovers. This was observed later by sociologists and held great interest. In 1971 the festival had finally arrived to its permanent residency in Reading.

Important highlights throughout the years

The Reading Festival became highly influential in the 90’s with one of the highlights being the memorable Nirvana performance in 1992, still remaining one of the notorious moments of the decade, with Curt Cobain who entered the stage on a wheelchair and a hospital robe, addressing the rumors about his deteriorating mental health and the unusual opening of his signature hymn “Smells Like Teen Spirit” with the chords of the song “More Than a Feeling” by Boston which was claimed to be the source from which he ripped off the song. This is one example among many historical performances which took place in Reading Festival over the years.
