At first he was highly influenced by the early Bob Dylan works and like his whole family he liked Al Johnson. It is plausible to say he combined all his influences successfully, having elements of folk, jazz, rock and pop in his music. His variety allowed him to overcome the passage of time and have 40 years of successful career while remaining relevant and interesting despite some of his albums in the 80's wasn't brilliant and described by Steward himself as "awful". Nowadays Stewart presents his familiar look and haircut and performing extensively, presenting a living classic of popular music from the last quarter of 20th century.
