Sunderland AFC Membership: What You Need to Know

Buying Sunderland AFC from the club is very different in 2026/27. The club has introduced its new Black Cats Membership programme, with Adult membership costing $64, Academy membership starting at $40, and a separate $26 Season Ticket Plus option for existing season ticket holders.

For non-season ticket holders, membership gives you access to home match ticket ballots and a spot on Sunderland's 2027/28 season ticket waiting list. It does not include match tickets, guarantee them or even offer a conventional first-come-first-served members' sale.

That represents a major change from Sunderland's previous system. As recently as the final weeks of 2025/26, home tickets were being sold according to criteria such as previous purchase history.

Things have now changed, and Black Cats Membership arrived after Sunderland finished seventh in their first Premier League season back and qualified for the Europa League.

Sunderland AFC Membership Prices for 2026/27

There are three Sunderland membership options, although only two are really comparable.

*Sunderland's current sales pages and pricing FAQs give the Academy age range as 2 to 18. The original 2026/27 membership terms still state 4 to 18, which appears to be an unresolved discrepancy in the club's documentation.

For families, the $13 discount is automatically applied to the second Academy membership. Sunderland currently asks supporters buying for a third or subsequent child to contact the club for a discount code because its checkout system cannot yet apply the reduction automatically.

Note Adult/Academy versus Season Ticket Plus. Here, Season Ticket Plus isn't a superior $26 version of the other memberships as it serves an entirely different purpose, giving existing Sunderland season ticket holders access to a new away ticket ballot.

How to Get Sunderland Tickets with a Membership

If you want a general admission home ticket at the Stadium of Light, Adult or Academy membership gives you the first opportunity to get one through a ballot.

The process works like this:

1. Buy an active Black Cats Adult or Academy membership.
2. Wait for Sunderland to open the ballot for the individual fixture.
3. Opt into the ballot.
4. Choose preferred seating areas from the inventory Sunderland makes available, or indicate that you do not mind where you sit.
5. If successful, Sunderland allocates a seat according to those preferences and attempts to take payment.
6. You then pay the normal general admission match ticket price on top of the membership fee.

This system covers men's Premier League, Europa League tickets and domestic cup home matches.

So membership buys access to the ballot rather than access to the stadium. Each ballot is still subject to availability and demand.

Can you apply for Sunderland tickets with friends and family?

Yes, although every person needs their own membership.

Accounts can be linked through Friends & Family and entered together, with Sunderland attempting to allocate the group together where inventory allows. Adjoining seats are not guaranteed.

The ballot remains strictly one ticket per member. An adult taking two children would therefore need an Adult membership plus two separate Academy memberships, costing $130 in membership fees alone before buying any match tickets.

Can non-members still buy Sunderland tickets?

Technically, yes.

Any home tickets remaining after the Adult and Academy member ballot can proceed to general sale for non-members. Membership is therefore not an absolute requirement for attending a home game.

Keep in mind that non-members only get whatever inventory survives the membership ballot.

Given the demand that prompted Sunderland to introduce this system in the first place, general sale should be regarded as an additional possibility rather than an equivalent ticket buying route.

How Much Do Sunderland Tickets Cost After Buying Membership?

The membership fee does not give you discounted match tickets. A successful ballot entrant still has to pay the normal price for their seat.

Those prices were announced separately from membership and underline how the scheme works. An Adult member attending the Fulham match from the cheapest price band would have paid $64 for annual membership plus $52 for the ticket.

Membership is therefore best thought of as an annual ticket access fee, with every successful match purchase sitting on top.

Sunderland Membership and the Season ticket Waiting List

For some supporters, the home ballot may not actually be the most important membership benefit.

Sunderland's 2027/28 season ticket waiting list is available exclusively to Black Cats Adult and Academy members. There is no separate fee to join, and members receive a fixed position rather than repeatedly entering a ballot for any season tickets that become available.

Most importantly, you have to keep your membership active. If it lapses, you lose your waiting list position.

That matters because supply is extremely limited. Sunderland chief executive Tom Burwell said in June 2026 that the existing season ticket waiting list contained around 15,000 supporters, while only approximately 300 seats became available last season.

Supporters can decline a season ticket when their turn comes and retain their position, although Sunderland warns that another opportunity may not arise during that season. There is also no guarantee of eventually receiving a season ticket or of being offered a particular part of the ground.

In practical terms, that makes the $64 Adult membership an ongoing commitment for anyone serious about eventually becoming a Sunderland season ticket holder.

How Season Ticket Plus Works for Away Tickets

Season Ticket Plus tackles an entirely different problem: Getting Sunderland away tickets when you don't have enough Black Cat Points to qualify through the normal sales phases.

For 2026/27, Sunderland continues to allocate 90% of its general admission away allocation through Black Cat Points. The remaining 10% goes into a ballot available to Season Ticket Plus holders. This arrangement applies to Premier League, Europa League and domestic cup away fixtures.

That means Sunderland haven't replaced their loyalty system with a lottery. Long-standing away supporters still receive the overwhelming majority of tickets through points, while the 10% ballot gives season ticket holders lower down the points hierarchy another possible route.

Any inventory left after the main Black Cat Points phases and ballot can subsequently move into a later points phase.

Crucially, an Adult or Academy membership does not give you access to this ballot, while Season Ticket Plus does not give you access to the men's home ballot or season ticket waiting list. No single Sunderland membership tier covers both.

Sunderland Academy Membership and Family Rules

Sunderland currently markets Black Cats Academy to supporters aged 2 to 18, with the first membership costing $40 and additional children costing $26 each.

For somebody actually buying a membership, the latter is the current advertised eligibility, although parents of a two- or three-year-old may reasonably want confirmation from the club.

There are two other age rules to keep separate. Academy members aged 6 to 12 can enter mascot ballots, while supporters under 14 cannot be seated without an accompanying adult.

That can create an awkward situation when a child wins a ballot ticket but their parent already has a season ticket elsewhere. The child's ballot seat is not automatically placed alongside the parent's existing seat, so a move may need to be arranged before the game.

What Other Benefits Come with Sunderland Membership?

Ticketing dominates the value of Black Cats Membership, although Sunderland has added several smaller benefits.

Members receive live audio commentary and Sunderland Under-21 streaming where broadcasting rules allow, early access to full-match replays and a digital matchday programme.

There is also a 25% stadium-tour discount, although this is a one-use code rather than an unlimited seasonal reduction. Sunderland additionally advertises member competitions, selected special offers and early access to some Stadium of Light events.

Academy members within the qualifying age band can enter mascot ballots, while selected Under-21 ticket offers can add further value during the season.

These extras are useful, but they shouldn't obscure why most supporters will consider joining: access to scarce home tickets, the season ticket queue or, with Season Ticket Plus, away tickets.

International and Disabled Sunderland Members

Supporters living outside the UK can buy membership and enter home ballots and the season ticket waiting list on the same basis as UK-based members.

Sunderland also operates a dedicated international-supporter contact for case-by-case help with ticket access, although the club makes clear that this does not guarantee a ticket.

For disabled supporters, only the supporter themselves needs to purchase membership. Once the necessary disability documentation has been accepted, Sunderland can assign a complimentary Personal Assistant membership. Disabled supporters use separate disabled-supporter ballots, with a PA ticket included where appropriate.

It is all a substantial change for Sunderland. The club has gone from a purchase-history-led home ticket system in 2025/26 to a model in which an annual paid membership sits at the centre of both match-by-match access and the long-term route towards a season ticket.

With demand for Premier League tickets already far greater than the number of seats becoming available, that is ultimately much more important than the streaming, competitions or stadium-tour discounts bundled around it.
