About AFC Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth - also known as the Cherries - is a professional association football club based in Bournemouth, Dorset. The club was founded in 1899 and played their first competitive match that same year. They compete in the Premier League, the top tier of English football.   Bournemouth spent most of the 20th century playing within the third division, but reached the second division for the first time in 1987 season. After a period of financial instability following the turn of the century, they reached the Premier League for the first time in 2015.   In recent years, the Cherries have become one of the most exciting teams to watch in the Premier League. Their ability to keep the ball on the ground and create chances for strikers has led to some big wins against top-flight opposition.

Stadium information

Vitality Stadium has been the home of Bournemouth since 1910 and has a capacity of 11,364. It was previously known as Fitness First Stadium for sponsorship reasons, adopting its current name in 2015.   The record attendance of 28,799 was set in 1957, during an FA cup match where the Cherries played against Manchester United. The stadium has seen many renovations and developments over the years, including a complete rebuild of the ground in 2001.

Honours and trophies

The club have had a few cup successes over the years. They won the Hampshire Senior Cup three times, as well as winning the EFL cup in 1984.    In 2015, they won the Championship, gaining promotion to the Premier League for the first time. This was a huge achievement for a club that had spent much of the preceding century laying mainly in the third division.

Team information

AFC Bournemouth has had its share of standout players, including Marc Pugh, Steve Cook and Callum Wilson.    Marc Pugh played for the team from 2019-2019, making him one of the club’s longest-serving players. A winger with an eye for goal, Pugh has scored some crucial goals for Bournemouth, cementing himself as an all-time fan favorite.    Steve Cook served a mainstay in the Bournemouth defense from the moment he joined the club in 2008. A tough-tackling defender, Cook often started attacks from the back during his four-year stint at the club.   Callum Wilson burst onto the scene at Bournemouth in 2014, scoring twice during his club debut to constitute a 4-0 victory against Huddersfield. His first Premier League goals for the club came in the form of a hat-trick against West Ham, consolidating him as one of the most-renowned Bournemouth players.

Rivalries

Rivalries are an important part of any sport. They add excitement to games and create a sense of community among fans.    For AFC Bournemouth, the biggest rivalry is with Portsmouth, with neither side having a clear advantage. However, Bournemouth’s recent successes position them well to gain the competitive edge over Portsmouth.    Another big rivalry for Bournemouth is with Brighton & Hove Albion. Bournemouth has had the edge in recent years, but Brighton remains hot on their tail.   These rivalries create an intense atmosphere when the two teams play each other and add to the excitement of watching football.
