History of the World Cup

Before the World Cup was formed, the most prestigious football event was the tournament arranged as part of the Summer Olympics. However, by the 1920s, the game was facing a transition into professionalism that wasn't in keeping with Olympic sports. The first official World Cup tournament was played in Uruguay in 1930, where only 13 teams participated, and were divided into four groups. The tournament ended with a 4-2 victory for Uruguay. It has since been held every four years (with exceptions during the Second World War in 1942 and 1946). The current champions are France, who won their second title at the 2018 World Cup, held in Russia.

World Cup Winners

The trophy has only been won by eight national teams. Brazil has the highest number of victories, taking the title an impressive five times. They are also the only team to have played in every tournament. Other winners include Germany and Italy, who have both won four times; Argentina, France, and Uruguay, with two titles; and finally England and Spain, with one each.
