Getting to Villa Park Stadium

Getting to Villa Park Stadium

You’ve got your Aston Villa match tickets and are getting ready to belt out “My Old Man” from the Holte End. Now you’ve got to work out how to get to Villa Park in the first place.

Without further delay, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about getting to Villa Park Stadium.

Birmingham New Street Station: The Main Transport Hub for VIlla Park

Villa Park is about three miles north of Birmingham’s main public transport interchange, and a key hub for the British railway system. You can reach this station from almost anywhere in the country. Here’s a quick overview of the companies and lines serving New Street:

Getting to Villa Park via West Midland Trains

Once you get to Birmingham New Street Station you can shorten your journey to Villa Park by catching a connecting train to Witton railway station.

Birmingham’s main station is on West Midlands Trains’ Wolverhampton-Walsall line, with two services per hour, as well as extra services provided on Aston Villa matchdays.

Witton railway station within a five-minute walk of Villa Park. The preceding stop (travelling from New Street) is Aston, about ten minutes on foot from the ground.

Stop to stop, the train takes ten minutes to Witton from New Street station. The journey time from Walsall is 15 minutes, and from Wolverhampton it will take 28 minutes.

So if you make things line up the train is an easy way to get close to Villa Park.

How Much is a Local Train Ticket in Birmingham?

If you want to continue to Villa Park by train from New Street Station an off-peak adult return will cost £3.10.

For another public transport option, the buses are a little cheaper and cover all of the Birmingham area.

Villa Park by Bus: The Handy Local Way to Get to Villa Games

Transport for West Midlands has a comprehensive bus network, with a wide range of routes passing close to the stadium.

On Aston Villa matchdays there are also special shuttle buses helping fans get to the stadium with ease. We’ll talk about these first before moving on to regular services.

The AV82 Bus Service: The Easiest Way to Get to Villa Park from Birmingham New Street Station

Named in honour of Villa’s European Cup win in 1982, this Villa Park shuttle bus was launched in 2023-24. Run by Stagecoach, the AV82 offers an express service from Dudley Street outside the station to the stadium. Here are a few details:

  • Double-decker buses
  • Open to all fans, home and away
  • Departures every few minutes, beginning three hours before kick-off, and then for two hours after the final whistle.
  • 10 to 20-minute journey time, depending on traffic

A single is £3 and a return costs £5. You can buy tickets from the driver, or get them in advance through the Stagecoach app. You can also buy discounted group tickets, allowing four people to return for £15 saving the price of one ticket.

Using the AV1 Bus Service to Get to Villa Park

Getting to Aston Villa Games by Coach

If you need to get to Birmingham for an Aston Villa matchday, the city’s central location works in your favour. All journey times from Premier League cities are reasonable, which also helps to keep the cost down.

Served by the National Express, Birmingham Coach Station is in Digbeth, a ten-minute walk from Birmingham New Street Station. Here are the fastest and cheapest prices from major destinations in England:

  • London: From 2 hours and 45 mins (£8.90)
  • Liverpool: From 2 hours and 15 mins (10.60)
  • Manchester: From 2 hours and 30 minutes (£7.90)
  • Newcastle: From 6 hours (£19.80)

After arriving, the best option is to get to New Street on foot and continue to Villa Park from there.

Megabus services, which tend to be a little cheaper than National Express, will drop you off at St. Chad’s Queensway, which is within a 40-minute walk of Villa Park.

Driving to Aston Villa Matches: Parking Options for Villa Park

Safe to say, it is difficult to reach Villa Park Stadium by car on matchdays. The club operates an exclusion zone immediately outside the ground on Witton Lane and Trinity starting about two hours before kick-off and lasting up to an hour after full-time.

Added to that, parking at Villa Park is for permit holders only, and you can’t park on the surrounding residential streets, where parking zones are enforced on matchdays.

You risk a £60 fine if you park in a resident’s space.

So Where is the Best Place to Park Near Villa Park Stadium?

If you can’t avoid driving to the Aston Villa match, a popular parking spot is StarCity (32 Watson Rd, B7 5SA), a leisure and entertainment complex about a mile east of the stadium. This is a go-to for many drivers with Villa Park match tickets.

This is well outside Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone, as well as the Traffic Exclusion Zone surrounding the stadium, and has more than 2,400 free parking spaces.

If there’s a downside it’s that you’ll need to wear some comfy walking shoes. StarCity is about 30 minutes on foot from Villa Park, but a little less if you hot-foot it.

Catching a Taxi from New Street Station to Villa Park

It’s easy to get a cab outside New Street Station, with a taxi rank on Navigation Street, near the Stephenson Street and Victoria Square exits.

Due to the increased traffic as you approach Villa Park it’s a good idea to make this journey at least an hour before kick-off to avoid delays.

Price-wise, a taxi or rideshare service from the station to Villa Park should cost about a tenner for a 15-minute trip.

In the next section we’ll look into some of the cheaper, self-powered options to get to Aston Villa’s stadium.

Why Not Ride a Bike to Villa Park on AVFC Matchdays?

The club and Transport for West Midlands have made getting to Villa Park by bike easy as can be. All along the A34, starting near Aston University there’s a segregated Blue Route offering a car-less ride to the stadium.

Riding the Birmingham Canal Towpath to Villa Park

Another reason a bicycle is a decent option if you’re riding from Birmingham city centre to Villa Park is that the Birmingham Canal makes up a large portion of the route.

From Constitution Hill in the south as far as Thimble Mill Lane near Aston railway station you can ride along the canal’s towpath traffic free.

This ride can be done in 20 minutes without pushing it. Once you arrive you’ll find bike racks that can be used free of charge at the Academy building next to the North Stand.

How to Get to Villa Park with a Bikeshare

West Midlands Cycle Hire, in partnership with Beryl, is a bikeshare service for the Birmingham area, with stations across the city, including along the main route from the city centre via the A34. With this scheme you can hire traditional pedal bikes, but also e-bikes and e-scooters.

There are five West Midlands Cycle Hire docking stations within a ten-minute walk of Villa Park:

  • Lichfield Road
  • Grosvenor Road
  • Prestbury Road
  • Nelson Road

West Midlands Cycle Hire Pay as You Ride Pricing

For short journeys a WM Cycle Hire bike works out at good value, but you need to be careful how the minutes rack up:

  • Pedal Bike: £1 unlock fee, 8p per minute
  • E-Bike: £1.50 unlock fee, 16p per minute
  • E-Scooter: £1 unlock fee, 20p per minute

Walking to Villa Park from Birmingham New Street

Taking between 45 minutes and an hour from the station, walking to Villa Park might not be for everyone.

The upside of course is that you won’t have to pay a penny. And with traffic so nightmarish around Aston Villa’s ground on matchdays, it makes a little more sense in the hour before kick-off.

Even better, the Blue Route along the A34 also applies to pedestrians, so there’s a safe route to the ground, but you can also take the scenic route along the Birmingham Canal towpath.

Next we’ll help you get to Villa Park if you’re flying from abroad.
